No Filter Friday!

To the parents and caregivers out there that leave children in hot vehicles: SERIOUSLY, Just DON’T DO IT!!! Every year about this time you will start to hear warnings about the dangers of leaving children in vehicles in warm weather. So far in 2010, six children have already died and it’s just May. One of those fatalities occurred in my home state in Meeker, Oklahoma. A two year old girl was left in a vehicle for over 7 hours by a friend of her mother that was supposed to drop her off at daycare but forgot. The temperature outside was 86 degrees.
They will offer tips on how to remind yourself that your children are in the car so that you don’t forget. (EXCUSE ME……How in the hell can you forget???) Such as put a stuffed animal in the front seat and your purse in the back seat or put a brightly colored blanket on the car seat as an extra visual cue. How about you just don’t forget your child and lets call it a day.
The thing that gets me are the people that don’t forget the children are in the car but the ones that actually do it intentionally and think that it’s ok to just “run into the store”. NO MORON, it’s not OK!!! Would you like to be left in a car with no air circulation and excessive heat that continues to rise by the minute? No, I didn’t think so! While you’re in Wal-Mart browsing through the aisles for god knows what, let me tell you what your helpless children are going through in the car you left them in unattended.
1 in 5 parents think it is okay to leave their children in the car "for just a minute". (2002 poll by National Safe Kids Campaign and General Motors)
Heatstroke occurs when a person’s temperature exceeds 104 degrees and their temperature regulator becomes overwhelmed. Children’s system regulators are not as efficient as adults and their body temperatures warm at a rate 3 to 5 times faster than an adult’s. Symptoms include: dizziness, disorientation, agitation, confusion, sluggishness, seizure, hot dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty, loss of consciousness, rapid heart beat and hallucinations. A core body temperature of 107 degrees is considered lethal as cells are damaged and internal organs shut down.
The time it takes for the temperature in a vehicle to reach deadly levels occurs very fast. After 10 minutes=19 degrees, 20 minutes=29 degrees, 30 minutes=34 degrees, 60 minutes=43 degrees, 1-2 Hours=45-50 degrees. So, to those people that say "it’s not that hot out" or "it will only take a few minutes", it doesn’t take excessively high temperatures or extended periods of time for heatstroke and death to occur.
For example: On an average day with a temperature of "only" 75 degrees, and "only" 20 minutes, the inside temperature will reach 104 degrees!
Only 15 states currently have laws prohibiting leaving a child unattended in a vehicle. An Associated Press study "Wide disparity exists in sentences for leaving kids to die in hot cars" examined both the frequency of prosecutions and length of sentences in hyperthermia deaths. Charges were filed in 49% of all deaths and 81% resulted in convictions. In cases with paid caregivers (i.e., childcare workers, babysitters) 84% were charged and 96% convicted. Mothers are treated much more harshly than fathers and moms are 26% more likely to do jail time and their average sentence is two years longer than the terms received by dads.
My home state, Oklahoma, is one of the states that has a law against leaving a child unattended but from my experience it all depends who you are talking to how seriously they take it. Last summer my family and I were leaving Wal-Mart and as we were putting the groceries in the trunk I noticed a van parked beside us that had four car seats in it and all but one had a sleeping child. There was no adult in site that appeared to belong to the van. We sat in our car for about 5 minutes to see if someone was maybe just returning the cart or whatever but when no one came I called the non-emergency police phone number (at my husbands request because I was fully prepared to call 911) to report it. After I explained the situation I was expecting to hear they would send someone right out but instead she was extremely rude and acted like I was being a nosy busybody. She actually asked me "are the windows cracked?" I swear I about lost it, I told her "yes, but does that matter?" she asked "how long have they been there?", I told her I had no idea but that it was extremely hot outside and asked her if she was going to send anybody out. She told me that it would be awhile before she could send an officer and that the driver probably just ran into the store because the kids were asleep. I could NOT believe what I was hearing. I basically had to force her to take the license number and vehicle description and location.
So, as summer approaches and the weather gets warmer, please remember when your children are in the car, don’t let caregivers keep your children if they can’t remember your children and don’t intentionally leave your child in vehicles so you can run into a store.
OK…..that was my rant for the day! I feel much better getting that off my chest. And yes, I know that some people will probably feel like I shouldn’t judge others so harshly that have done this unless I have walked in their shoes or whatever other BS excuse they can come up with but here is what I say to that…"There is never an excuse for doing this and it’s never OK to leave your kids alone in a car for any reason! PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Thanks and have a great holiday weekend!

My New Favorite Blog

I was trying to get inspiration for a new blog post when I stumbled across something that made me laugh so hard that I had to share it with you. It's the blog, Rants From Mommyland, OMG it is so funny! You must check it out. I added a few links to some of my favorite posts below. Their blog is my idea of the perfect blog and I wish it were mine. Ha-Ha! Hope you enjoy it and it gives you a much needed laugh that us mommies sometimes need. Oh, and it also made me want to run out and get some "mommy juice boxes", which is what Rants From Mommyland call a box of wine.

An Open Letter to 'Perfect Mommy':

Tea Party at Target: This one is funny but it is also a reminder to try and help another mama out every now and then because one day you might just be that mama that is about to lose your shit too and could use a helping hand.

P.S. I'm new to this whole blog thing and I'm not sure if this is proper blogging etiquette to post my own post about somebody else's blog and if I'm supposed to do some kind of special link back to them (however you do that) or credit it in some way properly. So.....if I did something wrong here, please let me know or if I should add something.
Thanks, The Newbie!

Garage Sale Newbie

So, we finally had our garage sale this past weekend. My husband has been begging me to do this for years and I finally caved in and agreed. NEVER AGAIN!!! I have never had a garage sale and had no idea what all was involved. The whole process of going through all of the things that you have accumulated over the years is exhausting. Its really hard for me to let go of things. I seem to have a memory or attachment to everything. I found things that I didn't even know I still had. Such as the dress I wore to my high school graduation (over 10 years old!), notes between friends from high school (man were those interesting), college projects and papers (I was pretty impressed with a few) and PICTURES. Some of the old pictures I found were seriously hilarious! It was pretty fun taking a walk down memory lane. But the task of getting all these items set up and ready for the garage sale was not fun. We had to borrow tables and rent a clothing rack. The first two weekends we attempted to have the sale were rained out and this past weekend was hot and very windy. The actual garage sale itself wasn't that bad minus the few freak shows that showed up. We sold some things on Friday afternoon and then we didn't get out there on Saturday until 8:30 because my husband had to work and I didn't want to go out there by myself. When my husband went to put the signs out he literally had people following him back to the house. Overall we made about $250.00 which isn't bad but we still have a ton of stuff to get rid of. I think we are going to try again this Saturday and then whatever we have left is going to the Goodwill.

Here are a few things I learned throughout this process that may help you out in your future garage sales:
  • If you say the sale starts at 9am that really means 8am. Even if you state no early birds.
  • People will try and haggle with you over a quarter.
  • Put a price on as many items as you can in advance.
  • Be organized. We had many people tell us how nice it was to see a garage sale that was nicely organized.
  • Hard core garage sale people are a little crazy, be prepared to deal with it. We had one lady that stayed over an hour and told us her whole life story and all her families dirty little secrets. Another lady almost shit herself over a Sex and the City game. That same lady also had on a dress that didn't leave much to the imagination, she must have been channeling Samantha.
  • Make sure you have bags to put the purchased items in, they expect it!
  • Have a calculator handy so that you don't look like a total moron when trying to add up items and giving change.
  • Be prepared for your children to find items that they don't think need to be sold. Mine found an old fax machine that he now is using to conduct his business on.
  • Watch out for groups of people that come together and spread out. I discovered that this is a tactic to distract you from any one person and a perfect opportunity to steal things.
  • Don't be afraid to put anything out for sale. The things that I thought would never sell were the first things to go and the things that I thought would sell quick we still have.
Here are a few pictures I took:

Things I am currently obsessed with….

  • Having a garage sale. I have never had one before and I can promise you this will be the last one I ever have! We have been trying to get everything together to have it for the past three weekends and it just hasn't worked out. But this weekend it has to happen. We borrowed tables from people and they must be returned.

  • Blogging!!! I could spend hours reading about how to add blinkies, buttons, templates, backgrounds, headers and a million other things that I'm sure I haven't even discovered yet.
  • Figuring out how to track ovulation, it's not as easy as I thought it would be. You need all sorts of things: Basal body thermometer, ovulation tests, charts, calendars, books to figure it all out and TIME!

  • Letting go of things that are taking up too much space in our ever shrinking house. Everything has some sort of sentimental value to me. If it weren't for my husband I would probably end up on that show, Hoarders.
  • Couponing!!! Love saving money!
  • Two songs that I swear if I play one more time my husband may kill me. The first is, The House That Built Me, by Miranda Lambert! The second is, American Honey, by Lady Antebellum! Click on the song name and you can read the lyrics. I must be in a place of nostalgia because both of these songs deal with a remembrance and a longing for the past. They also make me think about the life, values and stability I hope I'm providing to my children through our home and the memories they'll always carry with them.

  • The Real Housewives of New Jersey and New York on Bravo. I seriously can't get enough of these crazy women. They are completely "Off the Rails" as Bethany from the RHONY would say.
  • My iPhone! I love everything about it. I've had it for about a year and it's still not old yet. My husband says he became an iPhone widow the day I brought it home.
  • Homemade Beef Stroganoff. I made it for the first time about two months ago and OMG, it's delicious and I just can't stop making it!
  • The weather at this exact moment. As I sit here typing this, the weather outside is getting bad. The tornado sirens just started going off! Better save this and turn computer off. OK…..I'm back, that was a crazy storm that kind of freaked me out. Gotta love storm season in Oklahoma.

How to Thursdays.....How to Start Using Coupons

I'm not a coupon blogger, but I am a blogger who loves coupons! I just recently started using coupons and I am officially hooked. Here are a few tips I've learned so far on my couponing journey that I hope will help you get started on yours! WARNING….It's very addicting!!!

1) Start slow. It takes a while to get the hang of using coupons (I'm still learning). Also, it will take you four weeks or so to accumulate a stockpile of coupons to work with. Don't expect to waltz in the grocery store and get $100 worth of groceries for $20 on the day after you decided to become a coupon queen. Be prepared to stand in the aisle going through all your coupons and then searching through the products on the shelf looking for the items the store has on sale and trying to figure out how to get the most out of your coupons. This does get easier and you begin to start looking less like a coupon newbie the more trips you make. You will make mistakes, but learn from those mistakes, give yourself a break, and keep pursuing savings. You'll get the hang of it!
2) Spend a reasonable amount of time on couponing. It's very easy to spend a lot of time getting ready for a grocery trip. So before you start, decide how much time you can give to your money-saving efforts. If you're up 'til three a.m. scouring couponing website forums and you haven't bathed your kids in two weeks, you might want to scale back a little bit. When you are first getting started, give yourself two hours a week to work on couponing. After you get the hang of it, shoot for one hour a week.
3) Don't clip every coupon. Just clip the ones you think you will use. If you don't have a dog, don't clip dog food coupons. Also, don't print every internet coupon you can find. That will only amount to a huge waste of ink and paper. Just print and clip the ones for products you normally buy (or want to start buying) or for ones you know are on sale that week. I usually go online to http://www.sundaycouponpreview.com/ on Sunday morning and preview what the coupons will be that week. If I want those coupons I go buy the paper, if not then I go to my other sources.
4) Find coupon sources. There are many websites out there that have coupons but here is a list of sources that I have found to be most useful and easiest to use.
  • Coupon Inserts that come in the paper: There are three main types of inserts: Redplum (RP), Smartsource (SS), and Proctor & Gamble (PG). There are occasionally other inserts but these are the main ones.
  • Printable Coupons: Many companies offer coupons on their main websites and there are also some main sites to print from. Coupons.com (or from the link in my sidebar), Redplum, and Smartsource.
  • Home Mailers: These are coupons that you sign up for on companies' websites and then they mail them to your home. They usually send out good coupons. If you are a new mom, you MUST sign up at your brand of choice websites for diapers and formula. Most name brand formula websites send $3-11 off coupons. Now who wouldn't want that?!?
  • Store coupons: Many stores offer coupons that can be used exclusively at their store. You can find these in their weekly ads that come in the Sunday paper, in your mail on Wednesdays, and printable coupons on the stores' website. Store coupons can usually be combined with Manufacturer coupons which save you even more money.
  • Coupon Blogs: I use some excellent coupon blogs to plan my grocery and drug store trips each week. These bloggers tell you what's on sale at which stores, where to find the coupons for those sale items, and most importantly, Matchup those two things so you can see what the final sale price would be on your items after coupons, before you ever even go to the store! Matchups are vital; they tell which stores are best to shop at for the week and save the most money. I want to give a shout out to the coupon bloggers I use most. To find the best deals every week, go to Money Saving Queen, Thrifty Mama, Deal Seeking Mom.
5) Divide and conquer. There are two big areas you can save in the retail market: grocery stores and drug stores. Pick one store at a time and become an expert at that store first, then move on to another and learn their system. Try learning CVS' system first and then tackle Walgreens. (Personal Note: If I were you, I'd start with CVS because I believe this where you can save the most money. For a great CVS Tutorial, check out the Thrifty Mama's post here.) Homeland is also another great store to use because they DOUBLE COUPONS up to a $1, everyday!
6) Don't try to figure all the deals out yourself. It can be very overwhelming to go through all the store ads and figure out which deals are the good ones and which deals you have coupons for – so DON'T DO IT! Visit these great blogs Money Saving Queen, Thrifty Mama, Deal Seeking Mom and take advantage of their hard work. Just be sure to comment and say thanks!
7) Finally, be organized. There are many different ways to organize your coupons, just do a google search for "organize coupons" and you'll get some great ideas. I currently just use a plain old envelope and paperclip different categories of coupons together. It's definitely not the best method but it works for now.

Many people go to much greater lengths of couponing then I ever will, for example, I will never buy coupons, participate in coupon trades or dig in dumpsters for other peoples thrown out coupon inserts (yes, this is something that some people actually do). I think the whole idea behind coupons is to just do as much as you feel comfortable with, don't spend too much time on it and don't buy things just because you have a coupon for it. One last thing, don't let other people who don't use coupons discourage you from SAVING MONEY. There is nothing wrong with trying to save money on the things that you are already going to buy. I can guarantee you that they won't be laughing when they see just how much money you are saving from couponing and you finally get to buy that new Maytag front loading washer and dryer or go on that much needed vacation to Mexico (sorry, I just got distracted with my wish list items, please feel free to insert your own). Don't pass up clipping a coupon for something you use, saying, "Oh, it's only a dollar." Designate a purpose for that dollar and then go out and save it! Before you know it, you'll be able to achieve some great financial goals.

No Filter Friday

Today is the day I can say all those things I've wanted to say all week but couldn't because I was filtering myself in order to achieve social acceptance.

  • To the moms in the neighborhood that stand in front of their house and wait for the school bus to drop their kids off: You live less than 2 miles from the school! Get in the car and go pick your child up! Let's help save the school district a little money one pickup at a time.
  • To the neighbors next door that constantly come over and "borrows" items to use for their meals: This is not Reasors, please make a grocery list and try a little harder to stock the items you seem to always forget. Here, I've made a list for you: butter, sugar, eggs, milk, and flour. Here's a link to coupons.com, you may even be able to save some money on those items. Thank you, drive thru, and please don't come again!
  • To the greeter at Wal-Mart who tried to give my kid a sticker as soon as we walked in the door when she clearly saw that we were in the middle of an all out breakdown because he didn't want to sit in the shopping cart: Please back away and don't try and place your sticker on my kids shirt and then look at me like I'm the worst mother in the world when he tries to whack your hand away.
  • To the new OBGYN I went to and voiced concern about what the possibility of being diagnosed with Hyperemesis again in my second pregnancy was and you replied, "We moms never come away unscathed from pregnancy" with that smart-ass little grin: Screw you lady! I lost over 20 pounds in three weeks, was basically made to feel like a crazy first time mom that didn't know my own body, had to have IV fluids multiple times, used 6 weeks of sick leave and vacation time and basically wanted to die. You obviously WILL NOT be the doctor I choose when I do become pregnant again.
Ahhhhhh, I feel much better! Why can't we all actually say these things on a daily basis? I bet we would feel much better at the end of the day. If you have anything you would like to say without your filter please share.

    The Wordy Owl Syllabus

Remember the syllabus they handed out the first day of class in college to give you a guide as to what would be covered? I’ve decided to do that also since I couldn’t come up with a good tagline for my header. One of the first tips many professional bloggers give newbie’s, like myself, is to have a memorable phrase that sums up the tone and premise of what your blog is about and whether you will have topics that will interest the reader. Like my first post stated, I like to talk a lot, so for me to have to sum up my whole blog in about 5 words or less is like torture. So after days of trying to come up with something clever and witty to describe the type of blog this will be I decided to make a list of things we may discuss.
First, let me welcome you all to class. Please sit anywhere you like. Each of you should have a syllabus below that will give you an idea of what we will cover. I hope that you find topics that interest you and will become a participating member of the class. Please feel free to let me know any additional topics you would like to discuss and we’ll see what we can do.
    ·         Motherhood in general
    ·         Being a first time mom
    ·         Trying to conceive for a second time
    ·         Crazy and maybe not so crazy ways to try and conceive a girl
    ·         Explanation as to why it is “OK” to hope for a child of a certain sex
    ·         Tracking ovulation
    ·         Pregnancy
    ·         Raising a toddler
    ·         All the things nobody mentions regarding pregnancy, birth   and parenthood that would be really helpful to know in advance
    ·         Marriage
    ·         Becoming a stay at home mommy
    ·         Trying to still have a sense of self after becoming a wife and
       mommy
    ·         Cooking and Recipes
    ·         Coupons and money saving deals
    ·         Rants and Raves on products, places and people
    ·         Anything else that happens to strike my fancy for the moment
